Local people will be given a taste of the artistic talent on their doorstep with an exhibition entitled “Sweetener”. A selection of work by Bedford College students and staff from Art, Design and Media will be on display at the BCA Gallery, High Street, from 26 March to 2 April (11am-5pm, free admission).
“Sweetener” will showcase the work of talented artists and give a flavour of Bedford College's annual end of term art and design exhibition to be held at the College's South Bank Arts Centre in June.
Students have been involved in the concept of the exhibition and a competition held with a brief to design artwork for promotional material. A panel of students and staff from Bedford College and the BCA Gallery chose the winning entry by Alexei Lloyd-Hooker (studying HND Graphic Design).
Sue Blackman, Director of Centre for the Arts, explains:
“We are delighted to be working with the BCA gallery on this joint venture, bringing art to the heart of the town. The exhibition will give a taste of talent from Bedford College's South Bank Arts Centre - just a step away from the BCA gallery on the High Street.
“We want to move away from people thinking we are just an educational establishment and to recognise us as an Arts Centre that they can use for music, dance, theatre, art, media and design.
“The South Bank Arts Centre is a community space for the artistic talent of local people. This is the place where people can access or create art, with a buzz of creativity all year round. We have recording studios, theatre and art studios and a variety of space that the local community can hire.
“The work on display at the “Sweetener” exhibition reflects the feedback we get from examiners and employers that the quality and standard of student work is extremely high.
“Our lecturers are also practitioners in their fields - working artists, designers and film makers who bring a unique level of industry expertise to the College. That gives our students the knowledge and understanding of what employers need - our students are employable and that is what this exhibition reflects.”
The South Bank Arts Centre is reaching out to the community as an inspirational space for artists and those who love the arts.
If you “love arts” you'll love the “Sweetener” exhibition.
