Steve Schofield’s practice explores the fascination that the British public has with American popular culture. In the growing photographic series Land of the Free, Schofield shows people in their own homes wearing costumes ordinarily worn at cult conventions. Although humorous, Schofield’s work also makes a political reference to America’s ongoing ability to infiltrate other cultures via the media. Schofield presents his sitters in typically British environments, which enables the viewer to see the awkward clash of cultures for themselves.

From 12 – 2pm on Saturday 13th June, you and your friends can join us to celebrate the opening of Land of the Free. This is a great chance to see the work and meet the artist!

Artist-led Workshop: Saturday 25th July 1-5pm £12 (concessions apply)
This unique workshop combines practical photography, discussion and feedback. You will work with Steve to take photographic portraits using natural light and then step into the role of critic to scrutinise your results.

The Portrait Gallery: 13th June – 8th August 2009
Be inspired by Steve’s portraits and take our own! Share one of your magnificent portraits for us to display in the exhibition. Colour or black & white photos are welcome. Maximum size 8”x10”. Post or bring your picture to us from 13 June – 18 July. (If you would like your photograph to be returned, please provide a stamped addressed envelope).
