Coffee House, in St Paul’s Square, have launched a new ‘green’ range of coffee, tea and hot chocolate to coincide with National Fairtrade Fortnight – an annual event which promotes ethical trading in developing countries.

Fairtrade farmers get paid a premium price for their products, above the market rates, which covers the cost of production and allows them to invest in their communities to improve living and working conditions.

Coffee House Director Ian Booth said: “We are really excited about our new drinks and we think our customers will be too. We want to deliver high quality products with a consistent taste and we’ve spent almost a year looking for the right suppliers to work with to do that.”

The company, which opened in Bedford’s former Tourist Information Office 16 months ago, boasts that its new coffee is also Organic and Rainforest Alliance certified: Organic farms don’t use synthetic chemicals, which is good news for animal and plant life. The Rainforest Alliance seal guarantees that tropical forests are protected and natural resources are preserved.

Booth said: “To find a coffee bean that’s triple certified is absolutely fantastic. Each of these three seals delivers great benefits either to workers or the environment in their own right, but to find a coffee that has all three is amazing.

“When Coffee House customers buy their daily cappuccino they now know that not only are coffee producers and their workers getting a good deal, but the environment is as well.”

The company have also launched a range of Fairtrade teas, chocolate and syrup at the same time as the coffee. Booth added: “All of our new products are authentic and traceable back to their origins – we know where our beans come from, how many other coffee shops can say the same!”
