Keeping people safe on the roads in winter is the work of councils, police and firefighters.

To dramatically bring home the dangers of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, or taking insufficient care on the wintry roads, a car cutting demonstration is being staged by firefighters on St Paul’s Square in Bedford from 7.30 pm on Saturday 27th November.

Fire crews, trained in using powerful cutting equipment to dismantle vehicles, will take a car apart allowing access to the trapped “victim”. Bedfordshire Police will be there to control the scene and will “arrest” the driver.

The timing and location is aimed especially at young people who are enjoying themselves on the Saturday night  “circuit” of Bedford Town Centre.

Beds Police will be staging Operation Jackdaw to coincide with this event - doing roadside tests for drink driving. They wil also be giving out wrist bands to “designated drivers” entitling them to free soft drinks in participating pubs and clubs in Bedford and Luton.

The event will be filmed by www.local-news.tv so those who cannot attend on the night can view on-line.
