Bedford Borough Council is delighted to announce a deal has been secured to keep Debenhams in the town centre for the foreseeable future.
 
The internationally renowned department store first arrived in the town centre in 1973. They have now signed a new lease on their current property at the corner of Silver Street and the High Street.
 
Debenhams is located on the High Street in one of Bedford town centres most sought after location, with approximately 75,000 square feet across five floors and this deal secures the property's location for the foreseeable future.
 
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: "This is a great deal which secures a major retailer in one of the town centre's most prestigious locations.
 
"For a nationally recognised brand such as Debenhams to commit to Bedford town centre proves that it is an excellent place to do business. We hope this news helps encourage others to follow suit as we continue our work to make the town centre even more vibrant and attractive for residents and for businesses.
 
"We are continuing to press ahead with ambitious regeneration plans for the town centre, including working with the Heritage Lottery Fund to revitalise the High Street. However, it is equally important that we work hard to retain existing businesses, and I am delighted that Debenhams has made a long term commitment to staying here."
