Bedford College students teaching others to keep town tidy

Thursday 23rd June 2011

Keeping the riverside setting of Bedford College beautiful for students and town visitors is always the aim of the Outstanding educational centre.

But sometimes a reminder is needed that litter dropping is not only unsightly, but also not eco-friendly. Supporting sustainability is a key aim of Bedford College, and so recycling of rubbish was the mission of litter picking volunteers on Tuesday June 14th.

Neil Keech, Senior Student Personal Advisor and Student Governor Fiona Cameron-Mackintosh teamed up with the College Sustainability experts and students to keep the riverbank tidy.

At the end of the day the person who had collected the most rubbish for recycling was to be awarded a BedfordBID voucher to spend in the town centre.

Student Governor Fiona joined Bedford College on an Access to Education Course and now has her sights set on a career as a Forensic Psychologist. She has started a Foundation Degree under which she studies for two years at Bedford College before completing the third and fourth years at a university. Despite suffering a disability, Fiona led the college litter pick last year and again this year.

The event was part of the Big Tidy Up supported by Bedford Borough Council and other authorities across the UK.
