Students have been clearing fast food rubbish from The Embankment in Bedford as part of competition.

The idea for the activity came from student Fiona Cameron-Mackintosh who decided a litter pick would be more interesting with a ‘Scavenger Hunt’ theme.

The first target was ‘fast food litter’ with participants tasted to find as much of this rubbish as they could in the space of 30 minutes. The winner received a prize of £15 BedfordBID vouchers.

The group began from the ‘Yourspace’ common room on the Cauldwell Stree campus and went along the river at St Mary’s Gardens and under the bridge by the Park Inn.

Whilst out picking, the group were also talking to other students sitting in the sun at the river to make sure that they were disposing of their litter properly.
Participating students in the group were:

Fiona Cameron-Mackintosh, Mary Wood, Olivier Du Fraisse, Jacob Couret and Jade Coe.

Olivier Du Fraisse picked the most litter and was the winner of the Scavenger Hunt.

This activity follows on from Bedford College joining in the the Borough Council’s Big Tidy Up campaign earlier in the Spring. Teaming up with the Mayor of Bedford and his staff, Bedford College people picked up litter during their lunch hour on Tuesday 23rd March.

Looking after the enviroment is a key activity at Bedford College where young people work towards saving the planet as part of their day to day curriculum and through special courses.

Following on from the example of the Borough Council’s Bid Tidy, the College has now established a Littergate Action Group (LAG) to help keep the riverside clean all year round.

Bedford College's Director of Sustainability Esin Esat:

"Bedford College is proud of its riverside location and strives to make sure students appreciate the beauty of the local environment and play their part in keeping it clean and tidy.

"The College is also committed to maintaining the wider environment and to this end is involved in a variety of "green" projects aimed at sustainability in partnership with local authorities, schools and other organisations."

Neil Keech from Student Service said the Scavenger Hunt idea showed that young people were coming up with their own ideas, which not only helped to make the project more successful, but contributed to their overall experience. “We would like more bright ideas please,” said Neil.

*College students are also being encouraged to take River Walks as far as the Butterful Bridge. A river walk document giving history and information about the area is designed to encourage a greater appreciation of the beautiful environment
