Bedford's CCTV team officially the best in the country

Comments

  1. “The hard working team monitor cameras throughout the town to keep our streets safe, 24 hours a day. I have been particularly impressed with their ability to track individuals through the town from camera to camera and liaise with Police patrols at the same time.

“Their dedication means our streets are safer places to live, work and visit and their recognition is richly deserved.”

  2. “The hard work and dedication shown by this small team is something the entire borough can be proud of. This award should send a clear message to anyone contemplating crime to think twice when it comes to Bedford Borough.

“By being named the best in the country, ahead of what might be considered more obvious choices based around inner city areas, they have shown how valuable they are in tackling crime."

The team behind Bedford’s CCTV cameras have been named the best in the country.

At an awards ceremony in London on Tuesday 8th June, the team of 6 were named ‘CCTV Control Room Team of the Year’ by the National CCTV user group.

The CCTV service in Bedford was launched on 28th April 1994 with the motto “At the heart of a safer community”. The motto and aims of the team are still the same but their level of protection and technology is almost unrecognisable.

Starting with just 9 black-and-white cameras, which shut down for 4 hours every day, the team now protects the safety of the borough with hi-tech cameras throughout the town providing a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week service from a secure, dedicated CCTV control room.

The vital role they play has been demonstrated by their success in assisting the police investigate various crimes, including the tragic murder of Boris Reavey in November 2008.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The hard work and dedication shown by this small team is something the entire borough can be proud of. This award should send a clear message to anyone contemplating crime to think twice when it comes to Bedford Borough.

“By being named the best in the country, ahead of what might be considered more obvious choices based around inner city areas, they have shown how valuable they are in tackling crime.

Councillor Will Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said: “The hard working team monitor cameras throughout the town to keep our streets safe, 24 hours a day. I have been particularly impressed with their ability to track individuals through the town from camera to camera and liaise with Police patrols at the same time.

“Their dedication means our streets are safer places to live, work and visit and their recognition is richly deserved.”
